Wet Scrubbers in VOC Service: What They Can and Cannot Capture

Part of the VOC Treatment Engineering: The Complete Guide — this article is one of the detailed pages in the guide.

Direct answer: Wet scrubbers remove VOCs only insofar as the species dissolve in the scrubbing liquid — water-soluble VOCs (alcohols, some ketones, amines, acids) are captured reasonably well, while hydrophobic VOCs (most solvents, aromatics, alkanes) pass through almost untouched. In VOC service the scrubber is therefore a preconditioning or polishing device, not a destruction technology.

The solubility boundary

Scrubber capture follows Henry's law — the equilibrium between gas-phase and dissolved pollutant:

  • Well captured — methanol, ethanol, acetone (water-soluble), acids, ammonia, amines.
  • Partially captured — higher alcohols, some ketones, glycols.
  • Poorly captured — toluene, xylene, hexane, chlorinated solvents, most esters.

A "90% removal" scrubber claim always hides the species list. Against mixed printing solvent, the real number is commonly 10–30%.

Where scrubbers belong in a VOC train

  • Acid gas removal before catalytic oxidation — HCl/SO₂ would poison the catalyst; the scrubber protects it.
  • Dust and mist removal — overspray and sticky aerosols that would foul adsorbents.
  • Water-soluble VOC control — when the stream is genuinely dominated by soluble species.
  • Quench after thermal oxidation — rapid cooling of halogenated combustion products before acid scrubbing.

Scrubber types in brief

  • Packed tower — general duty, moderate pressure drop, good gas-liquid contact.
  • Venturi — high dust/mist loads, high energy.
  • Spray tower — low pressure drop, large flows, coarse removal.
  • Wet electrostatic precipitator — fine mist and submicron capture where opacity limits bind.

Design and operation cautions

  • Liquid management — the scrubbed VOC ends up in the liquid; water treatment or disposal cost is part of the system.
  • Entrainment — carryover mist wets downstream equipment; demisters and drainage are mandatory.
  • Winter operation — freezing and crystallization risk on outdoor skids.
  • Corrosion — absorbed species acidify the liquid; materials and pH control matter.

Manufacturer perspective

We position scrubbers honestly: they are the best tool for acid gases, mist and soluble species, and a poor substitute for oxidation or adsorption on hydrophobic VOCs. The species list decides — a scrubber proposal without it is a guess.
